Where I’ve been: I’m now on the Emirates Business Promotions team!

It’s hard to believe that almost a year ago I applied for a Cabin Crew position with Emirates. When I received my golden call and accepted the opportunity, I decided to set a few goals for myself within the company.

Today, I am happy to share with you that I have achieved one of these goals. You are looking at one of the newest members of the Emirates Business Promotions team!

This means that I will be representing the airline at numerous events around the world (such as tennis matches, baseball games etc.) and speaking to media. I may also be selected to appear on television and participate in Emirates official photo shoots and commercials. I’m not sure when my first event will be, but I’m really looking forward to this new adventure!

As I’ve said before in my previous posts, I applied for a Cabin Crew position with Emirates twice before being selected. Even though being turned down the first time was discouraging, I picked myself up and tried again. Now look what I’ve managed to accomplish! The moral of this story and why I’m sharing all of this with you is because I believe that..

…to be successful you must maintain a positive attitude no matter what is going on around you. Focus on your previous successes rather than your failures, and use this energy to plan the next steps you need to take to fulfil your goals. Do not linger on the distractions that may be thrown your way, and always remember that anything is possible”

Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this crazy journey. I hope I’m making you proud! ❤

Happy International Flight Attendant Day!

Working as a flight attendant for a major airline can be a glamorous and exciting job, but it is also one that comes with a great deal of responsibility.

The safety and comfort of our passengers is always paramount. In fact, we undergo months of training to ensure we can handle any situation that arises onboard. From security to first aid, we do more than serve food and beverages on our flights!

Today we recognize this.

To my fellow crew, thank you for all that you do! 🙂

April Roster!

It’s my favourite time of the month- rosters are out! In April, I will be flying to:

  • Hong Kong, China
  • Amman, Jordan (turnaround)
  • Johannesburg, South Africa (x2)
  • New York, United States

This month is particularly exciting for me, because I will also be completing my probationary period with Emirates. This means that I will have been with the airline for 6 months and have officially completed my training as Emirates Cabin Crew.

I’m looking forward to sharing these adventures with you!

Layover Life: Madrid, Spain

Hola! This week I had the pleasure of visiting Madrid, Spain. A lot of Cabin Crew bid for this destination, so I was really surprised to see it on my roster this month!

After speaking to a few Cabin Crew on board our flight to Madrid, a few of us decided that we were going to go out and explore the city together. There is a lot to do in Madrid, so we headed downtown right away to try and see as much as we could within the 24 hours that we had.

Entering Plaza Mayor

We hopped on the Metro and went to Puerta del Sol or “Gate of the Sun,” first- one of the top places to visit in the city. This is because it is the location of the statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree, which are considered to be a symbol of Madrid. Casa de Correos, (the city’s governmental headquarters) and Kilometer Zero (a plaque showing the point where the measuring of the national highway system begins) are also there too, so the area is constantly bustling with people.

From Puerta del Sol, we ventured to Plaza Mayor a few blocks away where we had lunch. The plaza dates back to 1619 and was used to host bullfights. The structures in the plaza are a sight to see, most decorated with frescoes (a mural painting technique). There is also a statue of Philip III on horseback in the middle of it, as well as several restaurants and tourist shops around the plaza.

Plaza Mayor

We decided to grab lunch at Don Calamar (I swear that’s what it was called, but I can’t find it online anywhere to link you guys), which was recommended to by Cabin Crew. There, we enjoyed some authentic spanish tapas and some sangria before going to Mercado de San Miguel (The Market of San Miguel) and grabbing some churros!

Lastly, we ventured to Palacio Real (Madrid’s Royal Palace). Built in 1764, the palace served as the royal residence beginning with Carlos III. We didn’t go inside, but 50 of the structure’s rooms are open to the public. We also walked around the Plaza de Oriente (a beautiful plaza containing 20 sculptures of Spanish kings) and the Campo del Moro Gardens which are all in the same area.

Plaza de Oriente

If you go to Madrid, you’ll notice that a lot of the tourist attractions are close to one another. I highly recommend visiting all of the above places- it only took us a few hours to walk around and everything was stunningly beautiful.

Next Stop: Mumbai, India (turnaround). Then off to New York City!

Emirates in the news

New Emirates route flies non-Stop Dubai-Auckland

An Emirates Airbus A380 landed safely in Auckland, NZ from Dubai, UAE on Wednesday, completing the world’s longest non-stop scheduled commercial flight.

The route covered a span of 14,200km (8,824 miles) and was also the longest in duration, with passengers spending 17 hours 15 minutes in the air during the return leg from Auckland to Dubai.

This new service will be an addition to the award-winning airline’s existing flights, meaning that Emirates will then have five services daily into New Zealand: three A380 double-decker services to Auckland via Australia, a daily Christchurch service with a Boeing 777-300ER, and the new non-stop service operated with a Boeing 777-200LR.

The inaugural Dubai-Auckland flight was made by an A380 but regular service on this route will be carried out using the Boeing 777.

This record is expected to be short-lived by Emirates’ upcoming Dubai-Panama City service launching later this month. It will take an estimated 17 hours 35 minutes.

The purpose of these lengthy flights according to the airline is to “encourage even more trade and tourism between [these] countries, by offering more choice to passengers and freight customers”.

Hello Hamburg

Emirates Cabin Crew recently performed their newest “safety video” showing off their football skills to HSV fans in Hamburg, Germany. This comes four months after their successful performance in Lisbon, where they demonstrated a similar routine in front of 65,000 Sport Lisboa e Benfica fans.

New business class seats coming soon

As the world’s largest international airline and a leader in developing innovative products to enhance its passenger comfort in air travel, Emirates has announced that it will reveal a new Business Class seat for the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft at ITB Berlin on 9th March.

Inspired by the interior of a modern sports car, the seats will have a diamond stitch pattern of a light grey full leather cove and an ergonomically designed headrest to give it a sleek overall look and feel. Designed with enhanced customer comfort in mind, the new seat has a pitch of 72 inches and can be electrically moved into a fully flat sleeping position at 180 degrees.

Interview tips to help you land your dream job

After months of deliberation, you’ve finally spruced up your resume and hit that ‘apply now’ button on the Emirates Group Careers website to -hopefully- become Emirates Cabin Crew. You’ve received an invitation to the Assessment Day nearest to you, and it’s only a few weeks away. Now what?!

Last week, I answered your questions about Emirates recruitment process and how to go about applying for the position of Cabin Crew. It was well received, and you told me that you would like to know more about the selection process. How does the recruitment team select the best candidates for the job?

I can’t give all those secrets away, but what I can do is share some interview tips I’ve acquired over the years that have helped me to be successful. Without saying too much about the Emirates recruitment process, I will try to use examples from when I attended an Emirates Assessment Day to best explain these tips to you.

**Please be advised that I am speaking from my personal experience and not on behalf of the company itself**

Let’s get started!

image1 (3).JPG

Prior to attending an Emirates Assessment Day, it is important to do your research and understand the Emirates brand. This image was taken at the training college, where the Emirates slogan, Hello Tomorrow, is displayed on the wall.

Tip #1. Always do your research!

When applying for any job, it is important to familiarize yourself with the company and incorporate this knowledge into your interview. It shows that you are generally interested in the position being offered. It is also a good idea to review the job description of the opportunity again prior to your interview so you are able to prove to the potential employer that you are what they’re looking for.

For example, on the Emirates Group Careers website it states that Cabin Crew must posses the following qualities: professional, empathetic, progressive, visionary, cosmopolitan. If you are successful in the Emirates recruitment process, this is what you will be required to represent.

Tip #2. Look the part. First impressions matter!

In any interview, before you get the chance to introduce yourself, you are being judged. From your appearance to your body language, it is important to be professional the second you walk through the doors.

For example, Emirates is a prestigious airline. Therefore, you need to be able to prove that you can represent the brand well. Simple things like showing up on time, being well groomed and dressed appropriately will leave a good impression with any employer.

Tip #3. As Drake says, ‘know yourself’

Reviewing your résumé and previous work experience (if you have any) prior meeting with a potential employer is always a good idea. I’m not saying try to prepare your answers ahead of time, but you should always know what is on your application in case it is referenced during your interview.

You may not be able to mention your previous work experience directly to a recruiter at an Emirates Assessment Day, but the activities you complete as a part of the selection programme may require certain skills that you’ve used in the past.

Tip #4. Ask questions!

I was always told it is important to ask questions at the end of any interview to show you are interested in the position. During an Emirates Assessment Day, you will have the opportunity to ask plenty. NO, this is not the opportunity to ask about how much money you will make. Consider using this time to ask the recruitment team more information about the job, the culture and the goals of the company. Keep in mind that as much as you may want the position you have applied for, you need to figure out if it is right for you.

crop5123792894982500630_o.jpg

Always believe in yourself. I have been through the Emirates Cabin Crew recruitment process twice and here I am, a year after I first applied, walking across the stage at the Emirates training college having successfully completed all of the required courses.

To sum it all up…

The best thing you can really do in any interview is to be yourself. I’m a huge believer in “if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be”. Having gone through the Emirates recruitment process twice, I know that it can be disheartening if you aren’t successful. The important thing is that you learn from the experience, and if you are truly passionate about the position, believe in yourself and try again!

Layover life: Singapore & Melbourne

Hey guys! My apologies for the delay in getting this post to you. I have been off sick for a week and haven’t been that active online. But I’m back, and I’ve got two new destinations to tell you about!

A week or so ago, I was given my first multi-sector flight. The trip was 6 days long, and took me from Dubai to Singapore, Singapore to Melbourne, Melbourne to Singapore, and Singapore back to Dubai.

Some background information- at the end of each sector, Cabin Crew are entitled to a rest break or layover. This time is allocated to us based on our destination and other factors such as the length of the flight we are operating, the departure schedule of the route etc., BUT is usually around 24 hours long. During this time, we are given a hotel room to stay in and are free to do as we like. (Within limits, of course).

That being said, I had the pleasure of spending time in both Singapore and Melbourne. Here’s what I got up to:

Singapore

Gardens by the Bay – OCBC Skyway

When travelling, I try not to plan my day in advance. This is because I find that I have more fun when I go with the flow, instead of stressing over how many activities I can cram into a short period of time.

Singapore has a lot to offer, so I knew that whatever I got up to was going to be an adventure. After speaking with the staff at my hotel and some fellow Cabin Crew, a group of us decided to walk around downtown. This eventually led us to the Gardens by the Bay– which I highly recommend visiting if you ever get the chance!

Gardens by the Bay is a nature park spanning 101 hectares (250 acres). It is part of a strategy by the Singapore government to transform Singapore from a “Garden City” to a “City in a Garden”. Capturing the essence of the region, the goal of this project is to raise the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in the city.

The gardens were stunning and the the OCBC Skyway within it provided us with some amazing views- which, of course, made for some great instagram photos!

Aside from the gardens, we also visited the Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Clarke Quay area of the city.

Melbourne

Taking in the street art at Flinders Lane and Cocker Alley

I’ve said this before in previous posts, but Australia reminds me of my home back in Canada! From the weather, to the architecture, to the people, I really love it here. This was my second time visiting the country, and I happened to be in Melbourne on Australia Day!

Australia Day is the official National Day of Australia and occurs on the 26th of January. Some history for you- it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and the raising of the Flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cove. To celebrate, tons of events are held across the country.

While in Melbourne, a group of us stumbled upon the annual Australian Day Parade when we were touring the downtown core. The streets were full of people decked out in Aussie gear and everyone was having a great time.

Keeping with the festive Australian vibe, following the parade we decided to check out some of the street art that Melbourne is known for. We walked around Flinders Lane and Cocker Alley, and ended up visiting the Fitzroy Gardens on our way back to the hotel.

If you ever get the chance to visit Melbourne, I highly recommend signing up for a street art tour. I wasn’t able to join one given the short time I was in the city for, but I wish someone would had been with us to speak to some of the work we saw!

Next Up

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

In the coming days I will be heading to Frankfurt, Germany followed by Manchester, United Kingdom. I haven’t been to Europe in years, so I’m really looking forward to spending time there.

Remember- if you have any questions pleaseeeeeee feel free to ask me by leaving a reply below. I’ll try my best to respond to you as soon as I can. Thanks for following!

February Roster

It’s hard to believe that it’s already my fourth month with Emirates. Time sure flies when you’re having fun!

My roster for the month of February consists of:

  • Manchester, United Kingdom
  • Frankfurt, Germany
  • Colombo, Sri Lanka
  • Washington, D.C., United States

I’m off sick for the next week, which is why I only have four flights scheduled. Despite this, February is still going to be a good month! I’m really excited to visit these new destinations.
