Beauty Basics: 5 Tips to help you maintain that Cabin Crew glow

Cabin Crew are always in the spotlight. Whether we’re operating a flight or walking around the airport, passengers are always looking our way. We are the ultimate ambassadors of our airline, which is why image and uniform is such an important component of our job. We always need to ensure our grooming is up to standard, so that we constantly look the part.

I’ve been flying for about seven months now, and some of the most popular comments I receive onboard revolve around my appearance. For the most part, Cabin Crew take pride in this. Standards or not, it’s a blessing to wear our uniform. We try to look the best that we can while we are in them. Hop on Instagram and check out #cabincrew and you’ll see what I’m talking about!

That being said, there are several beauty tricks and tips we use to maintain that flawless look at 30,000+ ft:

1) Maintain adequate rest

When you rest, your body recovers leading to a long list of benefits for your appearance. Cabin Crew often have a hard time achieving the recommended 7 to 9 quality hours of sleep each night. This is why it is important for us to use our rest days to recover from the hours we spend in the sky. More sleep means fewer wrinkles, less puffy eyes, a brighter glow to the skin as well as healthier hair.

2) Moisturize daily

This is one of the easiest ways to ensure your skin is always soft and hydrated. It will help you to look and feel younger given its anti-aging benefits, and will also protect you from the dry air and UVA/UVB rays you’re exposed to while flying.

 3) Drink plenty of water

There are many health benefits to drinking water. It keeps your skin hydrated but also assists with weight loss and kidney function too. The Institute of Medicine suggests that an adequate intake of water for men per day is roughly 13 cups, while women should consume around 9 cups daily. Other benefits include increased brain productivity and energized muscles.

 4) Always carry your beauty essentials with you

Many flight attendants carry their makeup essentials onboard to stay “refreshed” throughout their shift. Some flights can be 15+ hours long, and with the air as dry as it is, our skin starts to absorb our makeup fairly quickly.

 – Primer, pro-long wear and a setting powder/spray are your best friends: To help maintain a fresh look, we use primers, pro-long wear makeup products and a good setting spray or powder. Powders tend to be hard to reapply in the air and dry the skin out, whereas sprays help to soothe and depuff the skin.

Dry Shampoo and hairspray are lifesavers: Many airlines have standards as to how Cabin Crew can wear their hair. On flights, dry shampoo and hairspray help us to maintain these hairstyles while giving us a glossy, fine-tuned look.

 5) Get into a skincare routine

After a long flight, cleaning your skin can take some effort. Despite this, it’s important to have a routine if you want to keep your skin clear. Always take your makeup off before bed. Poorly removed makeup cannot only clog pores, but can worsen certain skin conditions.

In Summary…

Being a flight attendant certainly isn’t easy, but when your office is in the sky and you get to travel around the world for a living, it’s hard to complain. We chose this lifestyle and as difficult as it may get, many of us take great pride in what we do. Yes, we have a lot of standards to adhere to -especially when it comes to our image and uniform- but the feeling you get when you’re all dressed and ready for a flight makes it all worth it.

Where I’ve been: I’m now on the Emirates Business Promotions team!

It’s hard to believe that almost a year ago I applied for a Cabin Crew position with Emirates. When I received my golden call and accepted the opportunity, I decided to set a few goals for myself within the company.

Today, I am happy to share with you that I have achieved one of these goals. You are looking at one of the newest members of the Emirates Business Promotions team!

This means that I will be representing the airline at numerous events around the world (such as tennis matches, baseball games etc.) and speaking to media. I may also be selected to appear on television and participate in Emirates official photo shoots and commercials. I’m not sure when my first event will be, but I’m really looking forward to this new adventure!

As I’ve said before in my previous posts, I applied for a Cabin Crew position with Emirates twice before being selected. Even though being turned down the first time was discouraging, I picked myself up and tried again. Now look what I’ve managed to accomplish! The moral of this story and why I’m sharing all of this with you is because I believe that..

…to be successful you must maintain a positive attitude no matter what is going on around you. Focus on your previous successes rather than your failures, and use this energy to plan the next steps you need to take to fulfil your goals. Do not linger on the distractions that may be thrown your way, and always remember that anything is possible”

Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this crazy journey. I hope I’m making you proud! ❤

July Roster

This month I’ll be travelling to:

  • Johannesburg, South Africa
  • New York, USA
  • Dusseldorf, Germany
  • Manchester, UK
  • Oslo, Norway
  • Cairo, Egypt (turnaround)
  • Manama, Bahrain (turnaround)

That means I’ll be visiting three new destinations; Johannesburg, Dusseldorf and Oslo!

I’m looking forward to visiting Norway the most, because from what I’ve heard, it’s very similar to Canada. It’s also been on my bucket list since I was twelve and visited the Norway pavilion at Epcot’s World Showcase in Orlando, Florida. I thought the viking ships that were a part of the exhibit at the time were the coolest thing, as well as the trolls on display and the fairy tails that were being shared.

Needless to say, this next month is going to be an adventure and I can’t wait to share my experiences with you!

Next Stop: Karachi, Pakistan (turnaround) and Birmingham, England.

Layover Life: Washington D.C.

Last week, I had the privilege of visiting Washington, D.C. again! Having already been once, I had an idea of where I wanted to go straight away.

As soon as we checked into the hotel, a group of us decided to get ready and head downtown straight away. It’s very rare to get crew like this out together because most of us like to rest right after a flight. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised!

An American flag flies at half mast to honour the victims of the recent attack in Orlando, Florida.

The first place we visited downtown was the Lincoln Memorial. From there, we walked to the National World War II Memorial, Washington Monument and down to The White House. Thankfully, all of these places are relatively close to one another, so we were able to visit the entire area in just a few hours.

The best crew wearing matching USA t-shirts in front of The White House. It’s what the cool people do, right?

After walking around all day, we decided to grab some food a local pub before catching the metro back to our hotel. There is a nice shopping mall where we stay, so you can guess where we ended up for the rest of the day!

If you go: It’s always busy in the summer. Try to go earlier in the day to avoid the crowds.

Next Stop: Karachi, Pakistan (turnaround) and Birmingham, England.

Layover Life: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

This week I had the pleasure of visiting Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (KL). It was my first time visiting the country and I have nothing but great things to say about it!

When the crew and I arrived at our hotel, some of us decided to venture to the night street food market for a quick dinner. I’ve never eaten in this type of setting before, so that in itself was a really cool experience. Restaurants were lined up along the street, with tables in chairs placed on the side of the road. This is apparently common in Asia, but it was my first time seeing anything like it!

Following dinner, a few of us went out to explore the nightlife. We ended up at a bar called Beach Club Cafe. It’s a very popular place for airline crew to visit, and we had a great time.

Even after a long flight and late night out, some of us still managed to get up early the next day to do some sightseeing. We visited the Batu Caves, Templer Park and took a quick look at the Petronas Twin Towers.

The Batu Caves is a limestone hill composed of 18 caves, multiple temples and 272 steps. It contains the most popular Hindu shrine outside of India and has the world’s tallest statue of Hindu diety Murugan. The site is also known for its macaques (monkeys). As entertaining as it is to watch them, they can pose a biting hazard to tourists because of their territorial nature.

Templer Park is about a 15 minute taxi ride away from the Batu Caves. It is a forest reserve consisting of multiple waterfalls, jungle streams and trails. We only stayed for an hour because our driver was kind enough to wait for us, but it was enough time to see what we wanted to before heading back to the city.

Following our excursion, we stopped to take some pictures at the base of the Petronas Twin Towers. They were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 and are still the tallest twin towers across the globe. Although we didn’t have time to go inside, seeing them up close and in person was amazing.

The rest of my time in KL was spent by the pool, while some of my colleagues went to check out the local malls. There is a lot to do in this city, but I still wanted to save some stuff to do for next time. Hopefully that time comes sooner rather than later!

If you go: The Batu Caves are always busy, but we avoided the crowds by going during the week, around 9:00AM. Templer Park wasn’t that busy either. We were there from 10:30AM-11:30AM and were some of the only people in the park.

Next stop: Washington, D.C.

Your Cabin Crew Questions Answered

This week I was going to write about my layover in Munich, Germany, but I got pulled off the flight and ended up operating a turnaround to Malé, Maldives. SO, instead of that, I thought it would be cool to answer some of the questions you guys have been asking me on social media about what it’s like to be Cabin Crew with Emirates. (Note: I will be adding questions like this once a month to my Q&A page here).

1. Why did you move to Dubai to become Cabin Crew with Emirates?

There are many reasons why I chose to move to Dubai and become Cabin Crew with Emirates. In short, I saw it as an opportunity to travel the world, experience different cultures, live abroad and meet new people from around the globe.

One of my favourite quotes in life is ‘in the end you only regret the chances you didn’t take,’ so when I received my golden call after having applied twice, I felt as though I had to accept the position. In my eyes, it was fate. You can read all about my experience with the Emirates application process here.

2. How much time do you get to spend in other countries when you are flying?

The length of a layover depends on multiple factors such as aviation regulations, the scheduled departure time/arrival time of an aircraft, the destination itself and sometimes even the weather! Cabin Crew usually get around 24 hours, but again it depends on the above. The longest layover I’ve had was 32 hours and the shortest one was 16 hours.

3. Did you go to school to become a flight attendant?

No. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to have any experience in aviation to become Cabin Crew with Emirates. The airline teaches you everything you need to know at the Aviation College in Dubai.

For example, I have a BA Hons. degree in Political Science and Health Studies from McMaster University, as well as a postgraduate certificate in Public Relations from Humber College. -No aviation experience at all! 🙂

Got a question for me? You can leave a comment below or send me a message on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. I can’t respond to everyone individually but please know that I do read everything you send to me and appreciate your support!

Happy International Flight Attendant Day!

Working as a flight attendant for a major airline can be a glamorous and exciting job, but it is also one that comes with a great deal of responsibility.

The safety and comfort of our passengers is always paramount. In fact, we undergo months of training to ensure we can handle any situation that arises onboard. From security to first aid, we do more than serve food and beverages on our flights!

Today we recognize this.

To my fellow crew, thank you for all that you do! 🙂
